Costa Prize Shortlists 2012 revealed

The 2012 Costa Prize shortlists have been announced

The five categories (Novel, First Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book) include nods to double Booker winner Hilary Mantel and Benjamin Wood for his debut novel The Bellwether Revivals.

This year’s shortlists see the inclusion of two graphic novels (Days of
the Bagnold Summer by Joff Winterheart in the Novel category and Mary and Bryan Talbot’s Dotter of her Father’s Eyes in the Biography category) : a first for the prize.

First established in 1971, the prize (originally known as the Whitbread award) is open to manuscripts published in the last year by authors based in the UK and Ireland. The winner of each category will be announced at the beginning of January and awarded £5000 before they are pitted head to head for the Costa Book of the Year Award announced on 29 Jan 2013.
